Afghan Poverty Relief
Afghan Poverty Relief is a registered charity working to provide water, food, education and shelter for people living in the Afghan provinces of Balkh, Bamyan, Ghazni, Herat and Kabul.
The charity had an existing Drupal website that was restricted, design-wise, by the CMS it was built around. The previous developers had included HTML markup within the content editor, which made it difficult for the client to update and add new content and restricted the look and feel of each page. Afghan Poverty Relief approached Hydrant to redesign the layout of the website to make it more engaging and design-focused and make the CMS easier to use.
"On behalf of Afghan Poverty Relief I would like to thank everyone for their effort, advice and patience. Thanks to you, a year’s worth of work and frustrations has become a reality!"

design challenge:
Redesign the site to make the design more engaging and the navigation more user-friendly. Simplify the CMS to allow full management of content by the client.
our solution:
First we worked up a sitemap and structure to better understand what the client wanted to achieve and highlight the paths they wanted users to navigate. We used photography to ensure the site was visually striking and to highlight the charity’s work in Afghanistan. At the same time we updated the Drupal CMS, removing redundant or unstable modules to give the site better performance and making it more user-friendly for our client.
Our solution provided the client with the following key benefits:
- Created an engaging site designed to generate donations and interest in the charity
- Categorised and classified collections and content to enable better search and find facilities
- Removed markup from content to enable clients to fully manage content with ease
- Fully optimised the site for search engines
results:
- Increased site use and donations
- Easier content management
- Easier management of photographs and videos
- Increased audience awareness through detailed case studies
- Improved site flexibility, with excellent add-on capability for future development

Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery
In 2009, hydrant first started working with Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, the premier attraction in the North West that houses considerable collections of fine and decorative art, human history and natural sciences. Located in Carlisle, Tullie House is well known for its first-class customer service, and for exciting, varied events and exhibitions programmes.
The goal at that time was to develop a large, content-rich site, driven using the Drupal CMS, that would appeal to a diverse audience including teachers, school children and tourists as well as people with specialist knowledge. The latest iteration of the site, which has recently been completed by hydrant, means that objects and artifacts are easier to find because they are no longer in Flash, and both the home page and the events section are cleaner and more simple for members of the public to navigate.
“We found Hydrant very easy to work with and very understanding on our design brief. Stephen could see exactly what Tullie House's requirements were, which helped the project run smoothly.
Darren over saw the project, which was very well-managed, and Ian worked on the CMS, making it easier to use which has made a difference.
Everyone was so easy to work with and nothing seemed too much trouble. The after-care service is as good as the before-sale!

design challenge:
To refine the public-facing website and members’ portal to allow museum users access to the rich and varied artifacts and collections. Refine the layout of the on-line shop to drive sales and enhance Tullie House’s commercial presence.
our solution:
Site administration has been made much easier since the launch of the new website, and Tullie House have begun capturing both staff and customer comments so they can better understand user requirements and integrate these into their road map for ongoing development.
Our solution provided the client with the following key benefits:
- Increase site use and membership through a more engaging site
- Create user profiles to represent the different user types and member types
- Update the design of the online shop
- Update training consultancy with a more streamlined CMS
- Fully optimise for search engines and social media interaction
results:
Since the relaunch, the overall bounce rate of the site has dropped. The hydrant team have continued to work closely with the museum’s in-house administration staff, providing email marketing solutions that have further raised the profile of the museum and its events.
- Reduced bounce rate
- Increased site use and membership
- Easier content management and data collection
- More flexibility and targeting for event and special promotions
- Improved audience participation through educational resources and programmes
- Increased flexibility with excellent add-on capability

Chester Racecourse
This summer we worked alongside the team at Chester Racecourse Company to get feedback on the user experience of their Chester Races site. The data we gathered was instrumental in helping us to restructure and redesign the site to further improve the user experience.
One of the main comments we received was that the homepage and primary navigation structure was too complex. Based on this feedback, we opted for a splash page that would lead users to the main areas of the site. To ensure the splash page didn’t become a barrier to search engines, we built it around a light box, meaning that it sits on top of the main homepage so it does not affect the site’s ranking. It is also able to be edited, so key promotions such as the May Festival or Christmas events can be easily communicated throughout the year.
“Our online presence has become an increasingly important part of our commercial strategy & we were looking to take more control of our online assets. Hydrant provided us with the ideal solution in the Drupal content management system. They helped us transfer 5 existing sites onto the new CMS & supported the development of a new Conference & Event site. I would thoroughly recommend Hydrant to anyone looking for progressive solutions & effective project management & delivery. We look forward to working with Hydrant in the future as our online offering evolves.”

design challenge:
To redesign the website and restructure the navigation to provide a better user experience.
our solution:
One of the main comments we received was that the homepage and primary navigation structure was too complex. Based on this feedback, we opted for a splash page that would lead users to the main areas of the site. It is also able to be edited, so key promotions such as the May Festival or Christmas events can be easily communicated throughout the year.
In addition to the new splash page, we restructured the site’s primary navigation to be more meaningful to the different types of users visiting the site. Using JQuery, we built an interactive site map to give a useful overview of where everything is at the racecourse. We also enabled the use of custom fonts that match the font used in Chester Races’ print based marketing.
Our solution provided the client with the following key benefits:
- More refined and elegant site designed to meet the different types of race goer
- Updated training consultancy with a more streamlined CMS
- Site is fully optimised for search engines and social media interaction
results:
- Increased site usage rate
- Easier content management
- More flexibility for events and special promotions
- Increased audience participation through streamlined navigation
- Redesigned site offers further flexibility with excellent add-on capability

Bath House
Bath House, a luxury toiletries company based in Cumbria, asked hydrant to create a new online shop for its bathing and bodycare products. Their previous site allowed online sales, but the product search functionality was limited and many users left without completing their orders due to a less-than-intuitive checkout process. The new site is elegant, informative and easy to use. And because it’s built using Magento, Bath House can easily manage orders, control stock, and view reports on sales, products, users, search terms and a wide range of other metrics.
Hydrant have done an excellent job in redesigning our website with a new admin system. As well as increasing sales on the site by 40% in just the first few weeks of launching, it has also made the process of running the site far simpler and more user-friendly for us and for our customers. In addition the enhanced reporting system is greatly helping us in targeting customers and deciding on product mix. WOW! Thank you all at Hydrant.

design challenge
To work with the Bath House to create an elegant and easy-to-use on-line shop offering flexibility and client control.
our solution
We built an on-line shop using Magento, a feature-rich e-commerce solution. With Magento, the client can process orders and print invoices as well as manage multiple currencies, multiple ‘ship-to’ addresses and gift wrap options. They can also easily access reports on sales, users, abandoned shopping cart and search terms, and can see at a glance which of their products are the most-viewed and the most-purchased.
We have also:
- Structured the site to be search engine-friendly
- Enabled intuitive product categorisation, such as product type, fragrance and price
- Provided wireframes and structure for the client to retain their brand while working within a web design layout
- Ensured that Bath House understands and uses the information provided by Google Analytics
- Provided ongoing support by working with Bath House on their email marketing
Since the site was launched there has been a 46% increase in visits, with a 10% reduction in the bounce rate.
